Inside Out Records after five years of existence takes a new direction. Experimental electronic music created by unknown forward-thinking artists is what you should expect from here onwards. And what a better way to start than a compilation of the finest Sound Design/Advanced Production students of label owner Stevie R.

The artists on this compilation have really taken things far when it comes to creative production/sampling/synthesis methods. From granular sampling to creating every element in a track from a single element (pads from woodblocks and vocals from chimes) is what you will be experiencing in DISSONANT SOUNDTRACKS. We kindly ask that you don’t skip through the tracks as you will be missing all the morphing magic.

“Folie” was born with its creator Finnbarr researching documentaries and other rare footage for inspiring samples. Throughout his research he discovered incredibly interesting sounds from tribes around the world; workers hitting metallic objects on the ground, kids talking, the elders smoking to name a few. Using various sound design techniques he created new elements and rhythms from those samples. Inspired by 80s forward-hinking band like Throbbing gristle, the artist took those organic, raw sounds and transformed them into an industrial, hard hitting break.

Ja Ra Ro went to town with advanced sampling for his track “Artifact”. Using only a few samples that he had recorded, he decided to use granular processing and explore polyrhythms and time signature changes inside his piece. From turning woodblocks into pads and far more extreme audio manipulation, he calls his piece “Artifact” for a reason. Artifact to him is the distortion and “error” on signals that you get from creative sound processing and is something that we need more in modern music!

Alex Hackett offers not one, but three pieces on this compilation. By using various stretching algorithms on samples, he does not hold back and takes them to the extreme until the elements reveal the sonic artifacts. From using 90s acapellas in unconventional ways to layering rhythms to themselves (with different articulation over time for the creating of intriguing ever-evolving polyrhythms), all three of his compositions are hauntingly beautiful.

1 0 1 by Henley Drive is really as simple as its binary name implies. One vintage drum machine and one Roland SH-101 getting along. One take recording on a desk is sometimes the way to go. This was one of those times.
