The word Vimana is used widely in the Itihasas especially in the Ramayana to denote primarily two things:- either a vehicle or a building-tower. Thus Vimanas are mentioned as present in Ayodhya referring to the building-towers in the Ayodhya city. It is mentioned as present in Lankapuri referring to the building-towers of Lankapuri. Lanka also has the Puspaka Vimana, a vehicle. This vehicle Vimana of Ravana is not mentioned as a flying saucer kind of a thing, contrary to the depictions in popular art. When Ravana came to abduct Sita, Ravana’s Vimana is mentioned as a flying chariot with horses yoked to it complete with a Sarathi (chariot driver)! During the attack of Jatayu, this charioteer is wounded and killed and the chariot was partially damaged by Jatayu. In various other passages it is mentioned as having flying horses, vaguely as driven by birds etc. In some passages it is compared to specially shaped clouds and so on. Adari is taking a journey with Vimana to Brahmaloka carrying Shiva’s snake in his hands. This is his first offering for Shango Records.
