Pau by Daniel Haaksman

“Pau” is the new single by Daniel Haaksman. It´s a baile funk inspired track that fuses European electronica melodies with the big, saucy beats from Rio De Janeiro, which seem to pop up left and right in clubs at the moment. For Daniel, who´s been promoting baile funk culture since the early 2000´s with his seminal “Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats” compilations and the output of his label Man Recordings, it´s a musical return to his roots.

The track is inspired by a recent Rio visit, where Daniel had a daily view from his hotel room of Rio´s famous landmark, the sugar loaf mountain (“Pão De Acuçar” in Portuguese). Morning, day and night, he observed the many colors and shades that would put the surrounding landscape of the sugar loaf mountain in a constant, fascinating change of lights (as illustrated in the accompanying music video for “Pau”).

The result of these inspiring moments led to the creation of “Pau”, which also embodies the various faces of Rio, the happy and joyful city of beaches, beautiful landscapes and elegance, as well as the dark and sinister sides of social inequality and inner city violence. The track´s title is of equal duality. It´s a word play between the Portuguese word for “Pão” meaning “loaf of bread” and the Brazilian portuguese slang word for the male genital, pronounced almost equally, but written “Pau”. Because it’s always about the subtleties, isn’t it?
